OUR STORY
Our story begins on Chebeague Island, Maine. Our family, the Grannell's, were part of a proud tradition known as "stone slooping". Sturdy one-masted boats carried granite from Maine’s quarries to railways and Northeastern cities, supplying the raw material for lighthouses, breakwaters, and public buildings. To support the trade, islanders built three wharves, including the Stone Wharf, or Hamilton Landing, which is still in use today. The work was hard, with small crews handling immense loads, but it provided both livelihood and identity for the community. By the early 1900s stone slooping declined as tourism rose, yet the photographs and stories that remain speak to a legacy of resilience and craftsmanship that continues to shape Chebeague life.

Life on Chebeague was shaped by both the sea and the soil. The Grannells were part of the island’s stone slooping trade, hauling granite from Maine’s quarries to eastern cities, but their livelihood did not end at the wharf. At home, oxen pulled carts of wood and plows through the fields, cattle provided tallow, and every resource was used with care. From this balance of maritime grit and farmstead self-sufficiency came the simple tradition of making soap, a craft that continues today.
FROM FARM TO SKIN
Inspired by the way our family once made soap at Grannell Cottage, we set out to craft something honest and lasting.
We source only the finest ingredients from local partners like Sonas Farms. Unlike many other tallow brands, we proudly disclose where our tallow comes from, ensuring that you're getting only the highest-quality, ethically sourced fat.
When you choose our soap, you're supporting hardworking local farmers dedicated to sustainable and ethical practices, and avoiding the risks of low-quality, undisclosed tallow used by other brands.
